In June 5, 1599 from a family of minor nobility in the town of Seville, Diego Velasquez was born and is the eldest of six children. As early as eleven years old he started to gain knowledge of painting and became an apprentice of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen he was certified by the painters’ guild to be a master painter which enabled him to paint as a professional. He married Pacheco’s daughter and got his earnings by doing some paintings of religious themes and tavern worls and saved enough to buy a house for his family and another house to rent out.
Many amazing pieces launched Diego Velasquez’s career as a painter; he is one of the few Spanish painters who could really be called a master in his genre because of the many great pieces he produced in his lifetime. Among his famous paintings is Surrender of Breda which he painted when he met Marques de Spinola; the piece symbolizes the victory of Spinola and it was said that Spinola was dazed and in awe when he saw the painting and cannot believe how amazing Velasquez’ skill is to show emotion through realism in his portraits.
