No Degree Required For Art

Portraits are not the easiest thing in the world, and many artists cannot depict emotion, mood, or moments effectively on canvas. Portraits abound on the living room walls of a Marion home owned by a brave, self taught portrait artist and his wife. He put together the faces of an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends for a single montage called “Faces”. He does it by capturing pictures from videos, which can create really funny faces. Only people who touched his life during the year and a half he spent painting the montage were included. The rest are filled with portraits of the lead singer of Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast, and a songwriter. He has had the most experience with pencil, graphite, and charcoal. He wanted to do more than black and white and tried conte crayon and colored pencils next. He and his Japanese wife, a Kobe native, were the subjects of his first venture with colored pencils. It is a juxtaposition of traditional American drawing and Japanese wood block print. Adding personal and Japanese symbols, he began the drawing with his wedding photograph, taken at City Hall in December 1996, as the foundation. Featured in the drawing but not in the actual wedding is their trio of cats. He turned the face of one of the cats into a mask from Japanese opera, which supposedly wards off evil spirits. In a position of good luck he decided to draw the second cat. Another embellishment is their kimono dress in the drawing. The kikyo flower, her matriarchal symbol, covers his wife. The third cat sits behind the vertical blinds outside the room, where he placed a gingko tree. The gingko is a sign of longevity, and the artist thought of including it after seeing a tree at the University of Iowa. For more information on paintings check out buy original oil paintings. The couple first worked together on this 1997 drawing. His wife was in charge of idea generation and evaluation. She says this drawing might just be their favorite. As long as he can incorporate people and faces, he would like to try landscapes next. Books are his primary exposure, with four featured and one on the cover, though he has not had his own exhibit. The book editor was exposed to his work after a staff member brought it to his attention. The editor emailed him to praise his work for its color, shading, composition, combination of portraiture and architecture, intelligence, humor, and complexity. His childhood days of drawing action heroes and rock stars have given way to virtual masterpieces. Now, he can adequately express his perceptions on paper. He says its better than taking a picture, because you can add or change things.
