Paintings can be naturalistic and also be representational in nature; it can be part of a political motive, emotion, symbolisms, or with narrative essence.

So many of Spain’s great masters came about and became popular during its Golden Age and on this era, most Spanish painters were able to make their mark in different kinds of art forms all over the world. Still, one master that became most renowned of them all is Diego Velasquez who was considered as one of the most highly respected and influential painters during his generation. King Philip IV and his chief minister are only a few of the powerful friends Velasquez has; he made paintings for the royal family and to people with position and high nobility, displaying his form and skills in all his works.
Being the first child of six children, Diego Velasquez was brough up in a family of average class in June 5, 1599. Velasquez’s ability was so noticeable that at the young age of eleven, he started his lesson with another master of the arts at that time whose name was Francisco Pacheco. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with his master’s daughter and chose her as his wife; he settled down in a house he bought through earnings he made in his paintings and he also purchased another house which he rented out to tenants.
Diego Velasquez’s career was marked by plenty of masterpieces of amazing works in the realistic style which garnered him a lot of attention; something that not a lot of painters enjoyed during his time. One well-known work that he created when he met Marquez de Spinola is the Surrender of Breda; the painting illustrates the victory of Spinola and when it was shown to Spinola he was captivated and greatly admired the brilliance of how Velasquez captured such emotions and expressed them through realism in his portraits. However, Diego Velasquez would create another masterpiece that is regarded the greatest piece he has created which is Las Meninas or TheMaids in Honour; it is the most viewed painting in the world and even most people that are not familiar with Spanish painters knew his name because of Las Meninas.
There are still much to be told about Diego Velasquez, his life, the role he played as one of Spain’s most popular painter during his time and his exceptional paintings that transcends through time.
