Diego Velasquez was born from minor nobility on the 5th day of the month of June 1559 in Seville. As early as age of eleven, Velasquez commenced his apprenticeship with master painter Francisco Pacheco, and by age eighteen he became a exceptional painter as certified by the painters’ guild which allowed him to work as a professional. Velasquez later on married Pacheco’s daughter and earned money by painting with religious themes and creating still life paintings of tavern pieces; through it he saved a lot of money and bought a nice house for them and another house to be rented out.
Diego Velasquez continued with his paintings and made a lot of amazing paintings that made him popular throughout the country and in different parts of the world. He made a great piece called Surrender of Breda, illustrating the victory of Marquez de Spinola, he created the piece shortly after meeting Spinola and when it was given to Spinola, he was stunned; Spinola cannot believe how brilliant Velasquez was and his ability and skill to capture and let the painting express its emotion.
